Staining is one of the easiest ways to give a room a new look. A darker tone adds warmth and drama, a pale or grey stain makes a space feel brighter and more modern.

Staining is carried out after sanding, as part of our floor sanding service. The freshly sanded timber takes colour evenly, and the stain is then sealed with oil or lacquer.

Why we always sample

Every timber reacts differently to stain — pine, oak and maple can look completely different with the same product. That is why we always lay out sample patches on your floor before we start. Our guide to choosing a floor stain colour has more tips.

Shades to consider

  • Raw and natural tones

  • Warm honey and light oak

  • Smoked and dark walnut

  • Soft greys and white-wash

  • Deep ebony

What can be stained?

Solid boards, parquet and most engineered floors can be stained after sanding. Pine boards restored through our floorboard restoration service often look best in warmer shades. Herringbone and block floors from our parquet floor sanding service can also be stained.

Our staining process

The floor is sanded to a fine, even finish first, so it absorbs stain consistently. The stain is applied and worked into the timber in manageable sections, avoiding overlaps and lap marks. Once dry, it is sealed with two or three coats of oil or lacquer. Some coloured hardwax oils combine stain and protection in one product.

Because stain must go on bare wood, it is best done alongside sanding. It typically adds half a day to a day to the project. We will also explain how different shades wear in family homes with children and pets.

Looking after a stained floor

Day-to-day care is simple — regular vacuuming and a damp mop with a pH-neutral cleaner. Felt pads under furniture help prevent scratches showing through the colour. When the surface looks tired, a maintenance re-oil brings it back without a full sand.

Your staining and finishing comes with our 3-month service guarantee. See our prices for staining costs.

FAQ

Questions about wood floor staining

All questions
How should I clean an oiled floor?

Use a soft brush or vacuum, then a barely damp mop with a wood floor soap. Avoid steam mops and bleach or multi-surface sprays. Read our care guide for a simple routine.

How should I prepare the room?

Empty the room where possible and take down curtains that reach the floor. We can help move heavy furniture if we know in advance. Our preparation checklist has more tips.

Can you stain a floor darker or lighter?

Yes. After sanding we apply test patches on your timber so you can see how each shade looks in the room before we commit. Find out more about our staining service.

What do you need from us on the day?

A normal plug socket and parking close by is all we need. Our machines run on domestic power, and we bring all tools, materials and dust sheets.

Can I get a price without a visit?

For many jobs, yes. Photos of the floor plus rough measurements let us give a guide price quickly. We confirm it with a short visit before work starts, so the final quote is fixed.

Why do you test stain colours on my floor?

Every timber takes stain differently. A colour that looks warm on a card can turn out much darker on pine, so testing on your own boards is the only reliable way to choose.
