Wood floor repairs done properly

Most wooden floors that look tired or broken can be saved. Cracked boards, loose parquet blocks, water stains, deep gouges and creaks can almost always be repaired in place, keeping the character and value of the original timber. Our Harrow team has repaired floors in Victorian terraces, new-build flats, schools and churches, so we have seen most problems before.

Many repairs are carried out just before a full restoration. When the repair is followed by professional floor sanding, new pieces disappear into the floor. Where a full sand is not needed, a re-oil can blend a small repair into the surrounding finish.

What we repair

Every floor type needs a slightly different approach, so our repair work is split into three specialist services:

  • Parquet floor repairs - re-laying lifted blocks, replacing damaged ones with reclaimed timber and restoring the pattern.

  • Floorboard repairs - split, rotten or badly patched boards replaced with matched reclaimed pine, and loose boards secured to the joists.

  • Engineered and solid floor repairs - damaged planks cut out and replaced, gaps closed and water-damaged sections rebuilt.

Repairs you can barely see

The hardest part of any repair is making it disappear. We source reclaimed boards and blocks of the same species, width and age wherever possible, and match the grain direction and colour before anything is fixed down. If new wood has to be used, we tone it in with stains and oils so the repair blends with the rest of the room.

Typical repair jobs

  • Squeaky or bouncy boards caused by loose fixings or worn joists

  • Hollow, lifting or missing parquet blocks

  • Water damage, staining and cupped boards

  • Botched past repairs and visible patches

  • Deep scratches, burns and impact damage

Why floors get damaged

Before we fix anything, we work out why the floor failed. Lifting blocks often point to damp or failed adhesive, cupped boards to a leak or poor ventilation, and creaks to loose fixings or tired joists. We check moisture levels with a meter, look at the subfloor and explain what we find in plain English. Where another trade is needed first, we say so, so your new repair is not wasted.

What happens after the repair

A repaired floor can be left as it is, blended locally or fully refinished. Some customers add gap filling to cut draughts, or a stain to give the room a new look. Please note that gap filling is excluded from our service guarantee, because wooden floors move with the seasons and the structure of the building. Our restoration work itself is covered by a three-month service guarantee.

Repairs with peace of mind

Every repair begins with a free survey, so you know exactly what is needed and what it will cost before we start. We are fully insured, work tidily and protect the rest of your home while we work. You can see examples of our work on the projects page, and typical costs on our prices page.

FAQ

Common questions

Will the new boards match the old ones?

Usually, yes. We keep a stock of reclaimed timber and source matching boards and blocks, then blend the colour during finishing.

Do I need to sand the whole floor after a repair?

For the best match a full sand and refinish is recommended, but we can often blend small repairs with a local finish.

Is it possible to stop floorboards creaking?

Yes. We locate the loose boards and re-fix them to the joists, often without lifting them.

How long do repairs take?

Small repairs are typically finished in a day; larger areas take longer, and we confirm timings with your quote.

FAQ

Questions about Wood Floor Repairs

All questions
How are your prices worked out?

Prices depend on the floor area, condition, repairs needed and the finish you choose. Our price list shows typical starting prices, and the free survey gives you a fixed written quote.

Are you insured?

We are fully insured with £5m public liability cover. We can send certificates on request, which facilities managers and landlords often need before work starts.

Is floor sanding messy?

Very little. Our dust-free sanding systems capture around 99% of dust at source, so there is almost nothing to clean afterwards. We also protect doorways and skirting before we start.

Can I get a price without a visit?

For many jobs, yes. Photos of the floor plus rough measurements let us give a guide price quickly. We confirm it with a short visit before work starts, so the final quote is fixed.

How should I prepare the room?

Empty the room where possible and take down curtains that reach the floor. We can help move heavy furniture if we know in advance. Our preparation checklist has more tips.

When can the furniture go back?

You can usually walk on the floor in socks after a few hours. Furniture can go back after 24–48 hours, and rugs after about a week while the finish fully cures.
