Re-Coating Lacquered Floors
Lacquer re-coating in Harrow: dull walkways and fine scratches refreshed, usually in a day.
Re-coating lacquered floors in Harrow
A lacquered floor is protected by a hard film that sits on the surface of the timber. Over the years that layer wears thin in busy areas, picks up fine scratches and loses its even sheen. As long as the wear has not reached the bare wood, a re-coat restores the protection without sanding the floor back to timber.
How we re-coat
Deep cleaning the floor so the new lacquer bonds
Gently abrading the surface to give the new coat grip
Vacuuming and tack-cleaning to leave a dust-free surface
One or two coats of water-based lacquer in your choice of sheen
When re-coating works
Re-coating works when the existing lacquer is sound and only worn on the surface. If the lacquer is peeling, the wood has gone grey or there are deep scratches and dents, the floor needs a full floor sanding first. For oiled floors, the equivalent treatment is re-oiling. Our guide on oil or lacquer explains the difference between the two finishes.
Benefits of re-coating
Quick, with minimal disruption
Low odour, water-based lacquers
Extends the life of your floor
Brings back a consistent, fresh look
Matt, satin or gloss?
You can keep your current look or switch to a different sheen. Matt lacquers give a natural, almost raw-wood look that hides fine scratches well, satin gives a soft glow, and gloss gives a traditional polished shine. We can show you samples so you can choose with confidence.
How often should you re-coat?
Homes usually need a re-coat every three to five years, while busy commercial floors may need one every year or two. The trick is to re-coat before the wood is exposed. We are happy to advise on a maintenance plan that suits your floor.
It is a popular choice between tenancies, when time is short. Most rooms are finished in a day and ready for light use within hours.

Questions about re-coating lacquered floors
How are your prices worked out?
Prices depend on the floor area, condition, repairs needed and the finish you choose. Our price list shows typical starting prices, and the free survey gives you a fixed written quote.
Do I need a full sand or just a re-oil?
If the finish is worn but the wood is not damaged, a maintenance coat is often enough. It takes a fraction of the time of a full sand and keeps the floor protected. See re-oiling.
Oil or lacquer — which should I choose?
Hardwax oil gives a natural, matt look and can be refreshed in patches. Water-based lacquer sits on top as a hard-wearing film that copes well with spills and busy households. We recommend the right one at the survey — or read our guide to oil and lacquer.
How should I clean an oiled floor?
Use a soft brush or vacuum, then a barely damp mop with a wood floor soap. Avoid steam mops and bleach or multi-surface sprays. Read our care guide for a simple routine.
Are your oils and lacquers pet-friendly?
They are. We use low-VOC oils and water-based lacquers that are safe for families and pets once cured. We suggest keeping pets out of the room for the first 24 hours, and trim claws to help the finish last.
Can you refresh a scratched lacquered floor?
Yes — as long as the wear has not reached the bare wood. We screen the surface, clean it and apply a new coat of lacquer, restoring the sheen without a full sand.
